Cacao cultivation
Today, cocoa is cultivated in tropical areas on both sides of the equator. These regions have an almost constant mean annual temperature of 25-28°C.
Cacao is very delicate
The mean temperature for cacao cultivation should not be below 20°C and the coldest nights never lower than 15°C. Cacao plants need very high humidity and annual rainfalls between 1,500 and 2,000 mm (three times as much as, for instance, in Berlin).
Cacao trees need the shade from larger leafy trees and a fertile deep soil.
Taste the terroir
As with wine, cocoa, too, gets its aroma and taste from the climate and soil conditions in the area where it is grown.
